In Western Canada, masons predominantly utilize a specific type of lath when wrapping houses. The mortar walls become significantly robust when exceeding 3/4" with this mesh. Typically, they prefer the mesh that features a "step" in the wire, ensuring it is positioned 3/16" away from the wall. I personally purchase it in Toronto, primarily using it for mortar beds, but I have also employed it for mud walls, including a few exterior projects. It has proven to be a highly effective material.
However, for shower installations over drywall, I opt for the lath instead, as handling several sheets is much easier than managing a large, cumbersome roll that’s difficult to unwind. Additionally, the PCI Portland Cement Institute has published an insightful book on cement plaster, which I acquired for guidance on executing a traditional stucco application on my home. The book suggests that using a 2x2 mesh is optimal but emphasizes that this is the maximum permissible size. Most masons in Western Canada favor this approach for house wrapping due to its durability.
