Kennel and run advice | MIG Welding Forum

Not quite a project yet but it will be kicking off in a couple of weeks.

I’ve got a week at home to gather all materials for and build a dog kennel and run to give the expanding pack of hounds their own space.

Seem to be going round in circles with the design at the moment as most of what turns up in a google search for dog kennel designs is click bait rubbish. I get the feeling that is more and more common on all google searches but anyway, I digress.

Basically what I’m thinking so far;

Buying galv panels from here, https://www.doghealth.co.uk/collect...ts/dog-kennels-runs-galvanised-panels-5cm-gap although there’s a lot of similar suppliers all about the same price. I would like to make my own panels but can’t see that I can compete at that price by the time I’d look at steel, time, coatings. Happy to be advised differently.

Concrete base obviously which will fit the panel dimensions I decide on but at the moment might be something like 3m x 1.5m

It’s the kennel/house part that I’m finding more confusing. Would like to avoid using wood, except for internal framing if required.
Big enough for 3 dogs minimum
It should have some insulation, be easy to clean inside in case its required (some kind of access hatch/door)

If anyone with kennelled dogs could put some photos up and give a bit of advice on what works and what doesn’t I’d be much obliged.

The only thing I came across on here is the thread below, If I could come up with something close to that standard I’d be very pleased.

Cheers My kennel is basically a shed, 12ft x 6ft. 9ft of one of the longest sides is fully open, weld mesh. The opposite side is solid. The gable end is half open, top half is weld mesh. The 3ft section has a large box within it for the dog/dogs to sleep in. The box is ply lined and insulated. The top of the box is hinged. The rest of 3ftx6ft area is used for keeping jackets, training aids and other stuff. The large open side has a gate into it, the storage area/ dog quarters has a ply door. The whole thing is roofed. The next one I build will have drainage, makes cleaning out the run easy. our's were walk in height ..the building was stone but ur's could be freesatnding from insulated steel roofing panels for the outside skin.....
our's had a window in each unit....ur's could be in the door....
I used the green type plasterboard then tiled up 1m high......tiled floor for the inside and plain concrete outside their sleeping accom.....
for the walls use waterproof grout....as our's was commercial venture, used a 2pack type grout for the floor....
this was found to be the only way to keep the pee stink down inside.....on the same subject....no matter what we did the concrete outside will stink of pee in the summer.......
the floor was self draining for a hose down.....
elec, had its own fuse board with switches n sockets 1.5m high......
did use an oil rad for heating on the bitter days....this was fenced of securley.... almost armour plated....bored dogs will chew anything.....
we used chain link type fencing 2m high, and for extra security from our little buuuger's I used a galv fine, weld mesh panels on the lower 1m......
cos dogs can rip holes in chainlink fencing....
security was 2 doors so we were able to enter their space and keep em in.....
our units were protected from wind by a hedge but if exsposed give them some wind protection....this will include protection from the SUN.....
now there may be some of this u can use.....

I would put the emphasis on drains and wash down,if possible get it all into the main drains, has to make life a lot easier. Cant think of anything worse than smelly kennels

Bob Ours is an old stone pig sty, with bought jail fencing as like you, its not worth makng them.

Concrete base, but wish we had put a drain in. For the house bit, if using wood, lift it up off the concrete with neoprene or a slice of stork board, keeps the wood dry. Id use onduline for the roof but under board with osb.

Or you could build the whole thing from stork board, only concern would be dog chewing it. Hes a picture of a small pig ark I made from the stuff.

Some farm places stock it, save pallet delivery costs.

https://www.solwayrecycling.co.uk/shop/pet-products-equestrian Thanks to all of you,

Access to a groundwater manhole is fairly close by, I had been planning to put a drainage channel the full width of the pad at the end away from the kennel and a decent grade down to that.

I’m liking the Stokboard idea for the kennel, it actually popped into my head just after I put this up as a potential material. I do have a fair quantity of double ally skinned insulated panels st home but they’re about 150mm if I remember right to probably a bit extreme for this purpose. Would also have a stokboard like the inside for condensation/conductivity and the outside for looks so it thinking I’ll just save that for another project an try and find some reasonably priced insulation sheeting to use instead.

Current plan concrete pad, galv panels. (We used to have chainlink kennels years ago, I hate the stuff now I think it looks terrible)

Dog box (maybe something like 6’ x 4’ x 4’) with a lift off lid/roof. Double skinned insulated cavity with stokboard or something similarly plastic (something that can be hosed/power washed out every now and then). Aluminium angle on external corners to prevent chewing.
Whole thing sitting on a plastic pallet or plastic posts so it can be shifted with the loader if needed.

Was thinking about having the box outside and cutting a small access in the kennel panel to maximise run space but that could be an invitation for randy dogs to jump in (we have three bitches) so the box will be inside the run with a couple of sheets of box profile over the top of it.

Just thinking about how to construct and join the box, you reckon I’ll need a steel or wooden frame and screw/glue the board to it? With cavity wall insulation between the stud work.
Well mixed progress the last two days

Cleared an embarrassing amount of ****e away from the chosen site and base is now in running a gentle grade down to a drainage channel the width of the run

Unfortunately I also found an in my junk folder from the run panel supplier saying that they couldn’t possibly deliver to the highlands/moon so I now won’t have the panels anytime soon. Might end up breaking the welder out and making my own after all.
Do they need to be steel? adds a rust factor then you need galvy. Could you not just use wood and a roll of stock fencing? I always think steel panels looks a bit industrial beside a house

For me yes, I’m not at all keen on rylock or chain link etc in this application, always think it looks like half a job and the required wooden framing always gets chewed, turns green, rots and ends up looking ****e. So galv panels best option for me, if they are good quality they should follow me the rest of my life.

Id be very surprised if your local farm supplier doesnt have panels available to you, most do.

Now that was a good idea. Just had a look through the IAE catalogue and they make them, so my local supplier can get them.
