Lip Injections: The Top 15 Frequently Asked Questions Answered
Lip Injections: The Top 15 Frequently Asked Questions Answered
Popular lip fillers like Juvederm or Restylane are made of hyaluronic acid, which is a naturally occurring substance in the body and is probably on the ingredient list in your favorite facial serum or moisturizer.
Hyaluronic acid fillers retain moisture in the skin to increase the volume, shape and structure of the lips for that plumper pout you’ve been longing for.
The fillers also have a small amount of lidocaine to help make the injection more comfortable.

How long do lip injections last?Lip fillers aren’t permanent and dissolve naturally over time.
Depending on which filler you choose, the results of the injections can last from six months to over a year.
Your injector will help you decide which product is best for the results you’re looking for.
A lip filler treatment can be done once with one or multiple syringes or gradually over a few sessions until you achieve your desired look.
Most people touch up every six months to a year, but it really comes down to how much you’re willing to spend and what kind of look you’re going for.
Like most cosmetic procedures, lip fillers will not last forever. But they still last a good while, and you can always decide later if you want to touch them up.
Are lip injections safe?Yes! All Juvederm and Restylane products are FDA approved. A reputable Board Certified doctor wouldn’t use something that isn’t.
Where should I get lip injections? You should only get the procedure done by a board-certified professional. It’s important to choose a Doctor or Medspa with a great reputation, so make sure to do your research.
Google, Facebook, Instagram and Yelp are all extremely helpful tools for your search — learn about the procedures they offer, read their customer reviews and look at their before and after photos from past clients.
The amount of filler you get is ultimately up to you, and you can tell your provider what you want, but he or she will should create a treatment plan that is right for you. It really comes down to whether you want a plumper pout or just add some subtle volume.
Are lip injections worthit?Real Self, the digital online resource for people considering an elective cosmetic treatment rated lip augmentations as 97% worth it by those who had the treatment done.
To put it simply, majority of those who get lip fillers are very pleased with their results.
There’s a reason why lip fillers are so popular! People get lip injections to enhance their natural beauty, balance their facial symmetry, boost their self-confidence and restore volume loss to aging.
Whether you want a more natural look or a dramatic change to your look, the minimally invasive procedure will more than likely achieve the look you are going for.
Plus, you can always get them dissolved in the rare case that you’re unhappy with the results.
The injections may cause some slight discomfort during the procedure, but it’s nothing to worry too much about.
You’ll get numbing cream put on your lips beforehand, and the actual fillers have lidocaine in them to make it more comfortable.
Numbing cream or a numbing injection will be done prior to your lip filler treatment, making it a lot more tolerable than the pain you feel from your waxing appointment.
Your lips may feel a bit tender with some swelling for a couple of days afterwards.
The price of injections done by a medical professional can range from $400 to $1,500.
This of course depends on the type of filler you choose and how many syringes you get to get the look you want.
Also, keep in mind that this procedure isn’t the type of thing to skimp out on by getting a Groupon or going to some discount place no one has ever heard of – it’s not worth the risk of getting botched.
You can get them wherever you want! You can do one lip, two, a little here, a little there… you can plump up wherever you and your provider decide will work best based on your desired look and your facial features.
Will my lips bruise after lip injections? It’s possible that some slight bruising will happen afterwards (which makes sense), but it’s nothing a little lipstick can’t hide. Try to refrain from touching your lips, limit your alcohol intake, use ice afterwards, and follow any other advice from your provider.
Can I exercise after a lip injection treatment? It’s best to avoid exercising for at least 24 hours after the procedure. Any increased blood flow to your face will only make the swelling worse, so let your lips do their thing for a little while before hitting the gym.
How will my lips feel with lip injections? After the swelling goes down, your lips shouldn’t feel any different if the procedure is done correctly.
Your lips will feel like your lips, just plumper!
So, as long as you find a board-certified professional at a reputable practice, there’s no need to feel scared of the treatment or of your lips looking overdone.

All Your Lip Filler Questions, Answered
It’s fair to say lips are having way more than a moment. Lip filler is one of the most popular treatments we perform at our med spa, and it shows no signs of slowing down. And, despite what you might have heard, fillers provide many more benefits than just creating an Instagram-ready, pillowy pout.
Many of our younger patients just want a little bit of natural-looking fullness. Older patients may have a different motivation—they want to boost thinning lips or smooth lines. The range of lip fillers available at our La Jolla practice means our expert injectors can give you just the lips you’re looking for.
We made this guide to help you navigate some of the most common (and quirky) questions about lip fillers, including how long lip fillers last, do the treatments hurt, and even how long after getting lip fillers is it okay to kiss.
I’m not an Instagram model. What can lip filler do for me?
If you seek lovely lips, you probably want just the right amount of volume, along with shapely contours that complement the rest of your facial features without looking “done.” Some of the ways lip fillers can enhance your look include:
Support your philtrum columns: You know those two lines that extend from the nose down to your upper lip? Those are called philtrum columns, and they tend to get flatter with age. A touch of filler helps give them a lift.
Define the vermillion border: Who knew the lips had so many interesting parts? The line that separates the pink part of your lip from the surrounding skin is the vermillion border. Filler can create more definition to enhance the lips.
Smooth vertical lip lines: The right filler in the right amount injected by the right filler artist softens the lines that develop with age.
Moisturize the lips: Some people endure chronically chapped lips, especially if they spend a lot of time in the San Diego sun. The hyaluronic acid in lip fillers binds to water and gives the lips an attractive hydrated appearance.
What are lip fillers made of?
Most lip fillers used today are made of hyaluronic acid (HA), a substance your body naturally produces that attracts and holds water. It gives your skin—and your lips—a plump, hydrated appearance. In fillers, this substance takes a gel form that adds temporary volume (6-ish months ’til you need a touch-up) when injected just below the skin. Because HA is naturally occurring, it’s safe to inject, and you won’t need any allergy testing before your treatment.
What is the best lip filler?
It seems like a different filler arrives on the market every other month. That can make it difficult for patients to know which is best for them—even if they’ve been getting injections for a while. But don’t worry, we’re here to guide you. The product lines from JUVÉDERM® and Restylane® are known for excellent, natural-looking results. Some of the lip fillers we prefer include:
- JUVÉDERM VOLLURE® and JUVÉDERM VOLBELLA®: We rely on these fillers to add volume and minimize lip lines. With a softer consistency, your lips will move naturally after treatment.
- JUVÉDERM® Ultra and Ultra Plus: A bit firmer than VOLLURE and VOLBELLA, these fillers are a great option for patients going for a plumper, poutier look.
- Restylane® Defyne, Refyne, and Kysse: These fillers create beautiful results with little risk of the gel migrating to other areas of the lips.
Choosing the best lip filler is only part of the equation, though. As with other cosmetic treatments, the injector’s expertise is the key to getting the results you want.
How much do lip fillers cost?
At our locations in La Jolla and Carlsbad, the cost of lip fillers ranges from $376 to $995, but pricing is subject to change. The cost of your treatment will depend on the amount of filler needed to create your dream lips. Fillers are typically priced per syringe, and we customize each treatment based on your goals.
Do lip fillers hurt?
No pain, no gain…NO WAY! We’re 100% on board with a stress-free, comfortable lip filler treatment. To do that, we offer different options to help you stay relaxed during your treatment. These include:
- Topical numbing cream: About 20 to 30 minutes before your treatment, we apply a cream to numb your lips. This is typically all that’s needed. Additionally, almost all fillers are pre-mixed with lidocaine, a local anesthetic that numbs you even more.
- Injectable nerve block: Not everyone has the same levels of tolerance, and numbing cream may not do the trick on its own. In those cases, we can inject lidocaine around the nerves to really desensitize the area.
- PRO-NOX™: This optional nitrous oxide (laughing gas) addition is great if you’re nervous around needles and need a little extra help to relax. You control the flow, and its effects wear off quickly, so there’s no need to have someone drive you home. That’s true of the other local anesthetics, as well.
Are lip fillers used for a ‘lip flip’?
A lip flip is a popular, nonsurgical treatment that uses BOTOX® Cosmetic to create the appearance of a fuller upper lip. BOTOX injections relax the muscle just above the lip, preventing the lip from curling under when you smile. Instead, it “flips,” or turns outward.
Can you get lip fillers when you’re pregnant?
You deserve some pampering during your pregnancy, but we recommend something other than fillers. The effect of fillers on a developing fetus is not fully understood. It’s best to wait until after your pregnancy and breastfeeding.
How long after lip fillers can you kiss?
This is a popular question—of course you want to try out your new lips! But it’s important that lip fillers (and fillers injected in other areas) have a chance to settle in so they don’t end up moving. We recommend waiting at least 24 hours before you start smooching.
