FAQ About PET Film

As a top leading manufacturer and supplier of release liner and face stock materials for pressure-sensitive adhesive, I am here to answer your questions about PET film.

Firsta contains other products and information you need, so please check it out.

Q1: What is PET material?

PET (also abbreviated PETE) is short for polyethylene terephthalate, the chemical name for polyester. The basic building blocks of PET are ethylene glycol and terephthalic acid, which are combined to form a polymer chain. The resulting spaghetti-like strands of PET are extruded, quickly cooled, and cut into small pellets. The resin pellets are then heated to a molten liquid that can be easily extruded or molded into items of practically any shape.

PET was first synthesized in North America in the mid-s by DuPont chemists searching for new synthetic fibers. DuPont later branded its PET fiber as "Dacron." Today, more than half of the world's synthetic fiber is made from PET, which is called "polyester" when used for fiber or fabric applications. When used for containers and other purposes, it is called PET or PET resin.

Q2: What is mylar paper?

Mylar paper is paper that is coated with or made from a polyester film BoPET (Biaxially-oriented polyethylene terephthalate). Mylar isn’t the polyester film itself but the brand of BoPET manufactured in the United States and the UK. Mylar is durable and has a high tensile strength; meaning it can be stretched for a long period of time without breaking. Its reflective and transparent nature make it a great accent for decorative projects as well as many other practical uses.

Q3: What is PET coating?

Coated PET film

PET coating, also called coated PET film, is a plastic film that has been coated with material on one or two sides of the film. The type and amount of coating applied to determine the physical, mechanical, optical, thermal, electrical and chemical properties.  Coated films may also be a combination of coatings and treatments, such as coating one side / treating the other side depending on end-use application requirements.

Q4: How many types of PET film are there?

• PET high-gloss glossy film

• PET film

• PET transfer film

• PET Reflective Film

• PET chemical coated film

• PET anti-static film

• PET Heat Seal Film

• PET heat shrink film

Q5: Can you print on PET film?

There are many different grades of polyester film, and some are produced specifically to be printable, using specific methods particular to those film’s chemical properties. Firsta has a number of specific polyester film solutions for many different printing methods, both conventional and digital. If you’re looking for laser-printable or inkjet-printable films, please check out our product page.

Q6: What is PET film used for?

PET film is often an excellent choice for more demanding applications in food and nonfood-film applications. Major uses include microwave, and medical packaging, plastic wrap, tape backing, printed films, plastic cards, protective coatings such as solar and safety window films, release films, transformer insulation films and flexible printed circuits. PET is also used as an aroma barrier film (e.g. coffee and tobacco packaging). This type of film is sometimes metalized by vapor deposition of metals, which further improves the barrier against oxygen, water vapor and aroma loss.

Due to the low odor, high chemical resistance and inertness, many PET grades are suitable for packaging applications under FDA regulations.

Polyester film is sold in various types, thicknesses, widths with properties tailored to meet specific requirements of particular end uses.

Q7: What is the difference between BOPET(BOPP) and PET?

Coated BOPP film

BOPET(BOPP) film literally means biaxially stretched polyester film, and PET means polyester chips, which are divided into three categories, large bright polyester chips, full matte polyester chips, semi-matte polyester chips, these three It is the raw material for the production of polyester film (PET film). BOPET film and PET film can be said to have no difference because the production process of PET film is bidirectional stretching, which is the industry standard for BOPET film.

Q8: Is PET a moisture barrier?

PET commonly is used for water bottles, but also is FDA-approved for food packaging, so it can be used to create some clamshell packaging. It provides strong moisture resistance and it’s a strong, shatterproof plastic and an affordable option as well.

How Are Silicone Coated Polyester Films Made?

Curious?

Okay here is the process.

The polyester film is coated with an aqueous silicone coating composition on one or both sides.

The aqueous silicone release acts as the coating.

It is made up of an alkylvinylpolysiloxane containing vinyl groups, a tin or platinum catalyst, a glycidoxysilane, and an alkylhydrogenpolysiloxane.

The process of covering the polyester film with the aqueous silicone coating composition occurs in-line, thus revealing the manufacturing process for the film before it is heat-set.

The silicone release coated polyester film has a bearable release value when put through solvents or heat

Can I Reuse My Silicone Coated Polyester Films

Yes.

Film materials can be reused by gathering spent release liners for labels or making new liners from already used films.

In order to recycle the films, they undergo a process for increasing the intrinsic viscosity.

We also add a coloring agent to cover the yellowing and blemishes on the films and voila! a new multilayered film is formed

What Are The Surface Finishing Options On Silicone Coated Polyester Films?

Our silicone coated films have the following visual effects:

  1. Matte

  6. The optical and 3D illusions- are 2D in real sence but they appear to be 3D. They trick the eye to be different than they appear.

Are Silicone Coated Polyester Films Durable?

Yes, it is durable. However, you still need to be gentle with the way you handle it to increase its longevity.

Do Silicone Coated Polyester Films Have Specific Adhesive?

Yes, they use standard and acrylic adhesive.

They stick without fusing and only require a small amount of pressure to pull away from the surface they have been attached to.

The adhesive remains sticky and fresh.

How Does Silicone Coated PP Film Compare To Silicone Coated PET Film?

These two terms can be very confusing especially if you are not keen on the spelling.  Here’s their difference:

Silicone coated PP films- here silicone is used to coat Polypropylene (PP) films.

They act as release films because of their mechanical strength. They are more heat resistant rigid than PET hence used as a barrier

Silicone Coated PP Film

PP release films have rapid curing at a dryer temperature of 105 °C and are mostly used in labels and adhesive tapes.

PP films are also used in pressure-sensitive adhesive applications as carrier films.

Silicone coated PET film- silicone is used to coat polyester or polyethylene terephthalate (PET). They are rigid and smoother than PP.

They have rapid curing at a dryer temperature of 135 °C

They are flat layer components of polyester with a smooth layer of silicone which results in a tough material.

PET is the best material for pressure-sensitive applications because of its surface uniformity.

PET is used for food packaging as it extends the shelf life of food and beverage. It is also used in the construction industry, cosmetics, and health care.

Silicone Coated PET Film

Which Quality Compliance Should Silicone Coated Polyester Films Have?

Other than the regulation we have as a company, we ensure our films comply with the following organizations:

Restriction of Hazardous Substance (RoHS)

They ensure our products are safe and efficient for our customers.

They help us recognize whether there are restricted or hazardous materials in electronic and electrical equipment, including cadmium, lead, mercury, etc

Their main aim is to ensure our products meet legislation and regulations according to the RoHS Directive and also to protect ‘you’ our customers from potentially hazardous materials.

It helps consumers know the safety level of electronics in certain environments and how to apply

Whys Should Silicone Layer On PET Film Exhibit High Level Of Curing?

Good question.

High levels on the silicon layer are necessary as they reduce issues of behind transfer found in most offline coated release materials.

The silicon system is tied up to the film surface.

Our films release force normally suits most standard adhesive but we can customize it according to what our customers want.

Either easy or a tight release.

Are Silicone Coated Polyester Films Eco-friendly?

Yes, they are.

Silicone is more often confused with plastic but silicone is more eco-friendly than plastic. Moreover, they are not biodegradable but still less harmful.

To meet the rising demand for ecologically friendly materials.

We offer a range of green transfers films with a unique coating free of formaldehyde, phthalate, chrome stearate, and the most recent Kemafoil® KTR ECO made of recycled polyester (rPET).

Can You Print On Silicone Coated Polyester Films?

Oooh, you want a unique touch on your films? okay, we got you.

We mostly print on one-sided films so they feature the prints or adhesive while the other side features the silicone coating.

Send us your designs and include all details you want on your films ie the logo or name of your business.

Save the document as PDF, SVG, or Vector.

Ensure you indicate the face finish you want whether matte, glossy, 3D effect with a soft touch, etc.

Review your design before sending it to use.

We will send you a detailed design. Once you approve and pay for it, we strictly won’t allow cancellation, refund, or returns come what may.

Kindly ensure everything is as desired before giving us approval.

We print on films using the following methods:

1. Casting system- this procedure involves the use of molten material, like a metal.

We pour the molten material into a mold cavity that takes the shape of your design.

After the molten material cools down, it solidifies to the desired form that is your artwork

2. Flock printing also called flocking is a traditional technique whereby the fibers of the film are applied to an adhesive-coated surface.

It gives the films a velvet or suede-like texture to the surface. You can dye and add colors to the printed area.

The fibers used in the process are known as flocks hence the name

3. Screen printing- here an artwork is placed on the screen then ink is pressed through the screen onto the film

The dye lays on top of the film hence clogging its pores. The more dyes you use the heavier the film feels

4. Digital printing- is a printing method that prints directly on a film.

Files in form of JPG or PNG are sent directly to the printing press to print on the film.

It’s cost-efficient and best for customized films
