Everything you need to know about replacing breast pump parts
Hey there, super mums and pumping parents!
Did you know you need to replace the parts that come with your wearable breast pump?
Just like any other breast pump, hands free breast pumps require proper maintenance to ensure we keep them super sucky and and super safe (aka: clean!). Not only does this ensure your baby's safety, but it also keeps your pumping experience smooth and hassle-free.
TLDR? Long story short: As a general guide, silicone breast pump parts should be replaced at least very 90 days.

Why do I need to replace my pump parts?
Pump parts are made with food grade BPA free silicone. As the silicone begins to degrade in the valves or diaphragm, suction power becomes impacted and this can in turn impact how much milk is expressed.
If you are overdue to replace your breast pump parts, replacing the parts may help resolve decreased milk supply due to poor suction
Replacing pump parts on time also helps prevent any bacterial contamination of your pump and your milk.
Understanding Your Pump Parts
Before discussing replacement intervals, it's essential to understand the different components of your Melony Wearable Breast Pump:
1. Flanges aka Breast Cushion: These are the funnel-shaped parts that fit over your nipples. They come in various sizes to accommodate different nipple shapes and sizes. Melony Pumps all contain a standard 25mm breast shield with two spare flanges ( 17mm and 21mm) to help you find your perfect fit
2. Valves: These small, often silicone, pieces create suction and regulate airflow within the pump, preventing air leakage. They play a crucial role in the pump's efficiency.
All Melony Pumps include a spare valve, so you can start but swapping this out first!
3. Collection containers: These are the bottles where the expressed milk is collected.
4. Diaphragms aka. Backflow Protectors: These parts ensure a secure and leak-free connection between different components of the pump.
How often should you replace your wearable breast pump parts?
The frequency of replacing your breast pump parts depends on your pumping habits. However, as a general guide you should replace your pump parts at least every 90 days.
Here's an overview of the average timelines for replacing specific breast pump parts depending on your pumping frequency:
Valve: Inspect them before each use and replace them if you notice any tears, stretching, or loss of elasticity. Replace valves and membranes every 2-3 months for optimal performance.- Pumping once per day: Replace every 2-3 months.
- Pumping more frequently: Replace every 1 month.
- Pumping once per day: Replace around every 2-3 months.
- Pumping more frequently: Replace every 1.5-2 months.
Breast Shields/Flanges: Replace every 6 months. Regularly check for cracks, tears or malformation that may indicate the need for immediate replacement.
It's generally recommended to inspect your flanges regularly for signs of wear and tear, such as cracks, tears, discolouration, or loss of elasticity which indicate the need for immediate replacement. If you notice any of these signs or if you experience discomfort while pumping, it's time to replace your flanges. Additionally, if your breast size changes significantly, you may need to switch to a different flange size.
Collection Bottles: Melony collection containers are designed for repeated use and can be washed and sanitized after each use. However, if you notice any cracks, scratches, or signs of deterioration, it's time to replace them to ensure the safety and quality of your expressed milk.
Bottle Connector: These play a crucial role in preventing leaks and maintaining suction. Inspect them regularly for any signs of damage or wear, and replace them if necessary.
Whats one thing we don't need to worry about with Melony?
Melony breast pumps don't contain internal tubing like traditional breast pumps so you don't need to clean it, regularly inspect it for mould and mildew, or replace it! Phew.
Time & money, saved.
That's a wrap, Mama's!
In summary, proper maintenance of your wearable breast pump is essential for ensuring efficient and hygienic breast milk expression. By understanding how often to replace the various parts and accessories, you can prolong the life of your pump and ensure a safe and comfortable pumping experience.
Whether you use a Melony pump or another brand, remember to follow the manufacturer's recommendations and consult with a lactation consultant if you have any concerns or questions about your breast pump maintenance routine. With proper care and attention, your wearable breast pump should support you throughout your breastfeeding journey.
