In the design of our aluminium door hinges, we've integrated a meticulously crafted pin arrangement. The hinges feature bushes that are accurately positioned, with the pin being securely pressed into the upper hinge. This use of a 'spline' effectively prevents any rotation of the pin in both halves of the hinge, ensuring a robust design that maintains structural integrity over time.

However, adopting this method can compromise the 'quick release' mechanism of the door. The necessary fit of the splined pin might cause issues with removal if one attempts to detach it from the aluminium section of the hinge.

Conversely, if a simple floating pin that operates in both hinge parts is utilized, it could lead to wear issues unless we install bushes on both sides. Our innovative design incorporates the bushes into the outer sections, allowing for the use of a floating pin that is machined with a flat surface. This is complemented by a small stainless steel 'grub' screw which locks the pin in place, ensuring that it does not rotate within the central part of the hinge.

To mitigate wear, we use a 316 stainless steel pin paired with a machined bronze bush, which requires minimal lubrication. The low coefficient of friction between stainless steel and bronze, approximately 0.1, contributes to a reliable performance with minimal wear, especially when used with lightweight doors. Moreover, we intentionally design the stainless steel pins to be slightly oversized, ensuring that when we ream the bushes post-installation, the clearance is minimal, which effectively eliminates any possibility of rocking.

It’s crucial to note that these components are specifically engineered for lightweight applications and are not intended for heavy-duty usage, such as those encountered in automotive road applications where wear rates would be significantly higher.
