Additives in Paint for Every Purpose: Buying Guide - Lowe's

Purpose: These additives are added to infuse a particular scent into the paint. This can be either a neutral smell or a pleasant scent like tropical, citrus or vanilla smells.  Scent additives can linger for about two to four months based on which one you use. It can act as an air freshener and dispel any bad odors. It can also eliminate the smell of VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds) usually present in paint. These are potentially harmful and its concentration is ten times higher indoors.

When to Use: Scent additives can be used to incorporate a particular scent you like in your room or neutralize existing odors. Mostly scent additives in paint are used to eliminate its chemical smell. Use these in latex or oil-based paint.

Purpose: A paint conditioner is essentially used to make paint thinner. Add some to your paint and mix it up for smoother paint flow and to reduce brush marks. The conditioner also helps keep a wet edge, which means the paint won’t dry while you do adjacent sections.

When to Use: You can use a paint conditioner to speed up the drying process and aid in adhesion by enhancing the performance of the paint binder. The paint binder holds paint particles together and allows them to stick to the wall.

Floetrol or Penetrol

Some of the best paint additives, floetrol and penetrol are commonly used as paint conditioners. Their major features and uses are highlighted below.

Water-based Floetrol

Floetrol, a water-based paint conditioner, improves paint finish while retaining the original characteristics of the paint. It acts as a lubricant to make the paint flow more easily off your brush and onto the wall. It also prevents the paint from drying too soon, resulting in a smoother finish. It’s suitable for both interior and exterior painting projects. It’s also great if you want to create any special effects with your paint. Acrylic pouring is one technique that results in fluid art effects with the help of floetrol, which extends the drying time. Another artistic finish that can be achieved with floetrol include swiped effects to create swirling patterns. This also works well in hot, humid and cold climates.

Purpose: These types of additives can be used for both interior and exterior painting. They can also be used in oil-based or water-based paints. It repels flying or crawling insects that land on the painted surface. Their effects tend to last for a few months after application.

When to Use: If you have a lot of issues with ants, carpenter bees or termites, consideradding insecticide additives to your paint.

Important Things to Know About the Chemicals That Are in Paint

Do you know about the chemicals that are in paint? Many chemicals are used during paint production to enhance, safeguard, and extend the life of natural and manmade components. Moreover, it serves as a shield against the elements.

Although volatile organic compounds (VOCs) should be avoided by those with asthma and allergies, there are some situations where they may be impossible to avoid. How can you minimize your exposure when performing vital tasks like painting your home, and what qualities should you check for in your paint?

The chemicals that are in paint production

Paints are produced in accordance with their required formulation. Because of this, the use of different chemicals affects how they behave in the process. Below are some of the chemicals that are in paint production making process.

  1. Binders in paints

Acrylic polymers, alkyd polymers, and epoxy polymers are the three most significant binders (resins) in modern paints. Based on different formulations, all compounds function as resins.

  • Acrylic polymers

Several emulsion paints use homopolymers or copolymers of propenoate ester base and ethenyl ethanoate as the binder. Ethenyl ethanoate is also produced by passing a combination of ethane, oxygen, and vaporized ethanoic acid through heated palladium(ll) and copper(ll) chlorides.

  • Alkyd polymers

Chemicals used in the manufacture of paint This chemical, which is created from polyols like propane-1,2,3-triol (glycerol), dibasic acids like benzene-1,2-dicarboxylic (phthalic) anhydride, and drying oils, is commonly found in decorative gloss paints (linseed or soybean oil). Alcohol and anhydride are combined to create alkyd. When alkyd resin is applied, the pendant oil drying groups react with airborne oxygen to create a cross-linked.

  • Epoxy polymers

A typical binder used in the coatings business is epoxy resin. It gives the paint a high level of chemical resistance in addition to outstanding adherence. Also, it inhibits the physical resistance required, for instance, on ships and chemical storage tanks, as well as corrosion. 1-Chloro-2,3-epoxypropane and substituted phenols, including bisphenol A, are used to create epoxy polymers.

  • Latex (PVA)

Latex is a product of the free radical vinyl polymerization of the vinyl acetate monomer. This binder is very compatible with other chemicals used in the manufacturing of paint.

  1. Solvents of paints

A solvent is a substance that allows the molecular or colloidal dispersion blending of the binder, pigment, and additives. Also, it's a wonderful idea to modify the specifications for paint viscosity for application techniques including brush, roller, dip, and spray. These substances are a few of the several solvents used to produce paint.

  • Xylene: It is an unadulterated aromatic solvent. Its molecules have a benzene ring structure.
  • Toluene: There is no ambiguity regarding the practical applications of toluene. Explosives, solvents, fuels, and the agricultural industry are all included as ingredients in Coca-Cola. A pure aromatic solvent with a benzene ring structure, it is yet another.
  • Alcohols (n-butanol, isopropanol): These are organic chemical compounds with an alkyl group's carbon atoms bonded to a hydroxyl group.
  • Ketones: A substance for organic solvents. Furthermore, it exists in the atom-bound carbonyl group.
  1. Pigment in Paints

Chemical ingredients are used in the generation of pain in order to produce color. Moreover, dangerous compounds label colors are used in the making of paint. These substances also have a significant impact on the list of substances used in the dyeing business. These are several chemicals that help your wall achieve the proper color.
