With the powerful steam generated by the Optima Steamer, steam is all you need.

In the case of smaller steamers that have detergent tanks, it is likely that the power of the steam jet will not be able to clean or sanitize without prolonged exposure. If you’re looking at a larger steamer that has a detergent tank (or more than 1), then you should be asking yourself is “Why?” because professionals that choose the Optima Steamer go with our machine because it replaces the need for chemicals. Chemicals sales also happen to be a great way to keep revenue coming in after you by their product. Steamericas does not sell chemicals.

But if you do have a need to incorporate fragrances or other chemicals, we offer a very effective, low-tech bottle attachment that connects to the end of a steam gun.

If you are looking for a steamer that can clean and sanitize surfaces yet leave behind little-to-no waste water, then the Optima is the product you are looking for. Most of our customers either do not need an extractor for the work they are doing or they already have a professional extractor that works perfectly with the Optima.

If you intend to use the steamer for cleaning the surfaces of fabrics and upholstery, you can expect cleaned areas to dry in minutes without extraction. If you intend to do deep cleaning into porous materials like cushions, or if you are operating in a dry facility, the Optima Steamer will work beautifully with the quality extractor you already have. If you are just starting a cleaning business and do not have an extractor, we can make recommendations for affordable extractors that offer professional features and performance that you likely won’t see with integrated vacuums on steamers.

If you’re looking at a competitor’s product and are enticed that theirs includes a vacuum, let us point out that our specialty is making the driest, most powerful steam. If you don’t have a professional extractor yet, you should definitely consider that there are better extractor options available compared to the ones you’ve seen added to the back of a steamer, which only increases the size and weight.

The Optima XD: 14.62 liters (3.86 gallons) stainless steel boiler with auto-fill

This is one of the most revealing details about a steamer and tells you a lot about its performance. The size of the boiler vessel determines the volume of steam that can be created. A smaller vessel means steam will run out faster resulting in a quicker drop in pressure and down-time while the steamer regenerates more steam, sometimes even requiring you to stop operation to refill the boiler. Or if the steamer doesn’t even have a true boiler but instead uses a coil, then you’re dealing with a steamer that only produces “wet steam” which is more akin to really hot water and produces a similar amount of waste water as a pressure washer. 

Most larger steamers with true boilers use carbon steel because of the overall affordability, but the trade off is that carbon steel quickly rusts when exposed to water. The Optima Steamer has a patented stainless steel boiler design. In addition to the extremely dry steam the Optima produces, the stainless steel also enables it produce hot “wet steam” that uses the boiling water from inside the boiler, making it’s “wet steam” far more effective at heavy degreasing than steamers with carbon steel boilers.

Though you may not find it published, the seller should be able to tell you the boiler size and whether it automatically refills. If they can’t tell you, you should be suspicious.

The Optima XD: 161,672 BTU Diesel Burner (~47kW equivalent)

Educating yourself about the heat source of the steamer will give you an idea of how powerful it is and therefore what it can do. If the steamer is all-electric and uses 110-volts, it won’t be able to produce the same amount of steam as quickly as a steamer that requires 480 volts 3-phase power. Using a diesel burner to heat the boiler enables a steamer to generate comparable, if not higher, power than all-electric steamers that use 3-phase voltage.

Pro Tip: The “maximum pressure” of a steamer does not tell you how powerful the steamer is. If 2 similarly powerful steamers have different maximum pressures, the higher pressure will require longer heating time. Conversely, a weaker steamer may have the same maximum pressure of a more powerful one, but it will take exponentially longer to reach its maximum pressure.

For example: A common maximum pressure for steamers is around 100-125 psi. It will take a 110-volt all-electric steamer upwards of 30 minutes to reach its maximum pressure while it takes about 4 minutes for the Optima XD to reach that pressure using diesel.

This is quite literally “how powerful” the steamer is as it tells you how much steam it can make. It’s the result of the amount of heat generated to boil water into steam as well as the efficiency of the boiler’s design. The higher the Steam Production Rate, the more steam the steamer can make. This translates to how well the steamer can keep up with continuous steaming, how many operators can use the steamer simultaneously and how much steam each operator can be spraying at a time. When dealing with all-electric steamers, this is almost directly proportional to the “power” or wattage of the steamer as the wattage represents the amount of energy being used to generate heat. To compare, the “power” of our XD is matched only by our 48kW (48,000 watt) all-electric steamer, which requires at least 480 volt, 3-phase power—not something you can expect from a 110 volt steamer.

Steam Production Rate is usually rated by the weight of the amount of water it can turn into steam per hour. A steamer’s Steam Production Rate has zero relationship with a steamer’s max pressure, so don’t be mislead by thinking higher pressure equals more steam. And if a steamer is claiming to have twice the Steam Production Rate as the Optima steamer, yet their burner is not as power as the Optima Steamer, they are lying to you. PERIOD.

Pro Tip: Find out what the Maximum Flow Rate of the Steamer’s Water Pump is. This will tell you the limit of water it can feed to the boiler in an hour and help you test the claims manufacturers make about their products.

For example: if the steamer’s water pump has a maximum flow rate of 1,050 cc/min, you can deduce that the maximum steam the steamer can produce is 1,050 cc = 1.05 liters = 1.05 kg of water per minute, of 63 kg/hr.

The Optima Steamer: 7-8.5 bar (102-123 psi) continuous

The spray of a steamer is the release of the pressure built up in the boiler, thus the pressure will drop as it’s being used. As the pressure lowers, the steamer’s heater/burner will be turned on and pressure will be begin to rebuild. If enough heat is produced, operators may be able to continue using the steamer and maintain a constant level of pressure, which is what is meant by the Continuous Working Pressure (and another way to think of the steamer’s Steam Production Rate).

The Optima XD’s 161,000+ BTU burner rapidly heats the boiler until its pressure reaches 8.5 bar or 123 psi, which combined with our signature high volume of steam output is effective at cleaning surfaces with steam alone and sanitizes with a spray temperature of up t0 135°C (275°F). As steam is being used and the pressure inside the boiler drops to 7 bar (101 psi), the burner kicks back on and rebuilds the pressure back up to 8.5 bar.

If two or more operators are using steam simultaneously, the Optima’s burner is able to provide enough heat to maintain the pressure, which is what makes the Optima a powerful and effective commercial cleaning solution—no loss in pressure. You won’t find this with most of our competitors because their burner doesn’t provide enough heat to keep up with the output, thus they will drop to a lower pressure when used continuously, requiring that you stop using one or more steam guns to allow the pressure to rebuild to a usable level.

Pro Tip: Don’t just look at the “Max. Pressure” and see a steamer live, in-person to see how it performs after being used for 5 minutes. If the steam jet begins to feel weaker and look lighter, you’re seeing the limitations of the steamer.
