10 Questions You Should to Know about design makeup brushes
Makeup Brush Guide: Everything You Need to Choose The Right ...
Choosing makeup brushes can be incredibly daunting, whether you are a professional makeup artist, an enthusiastic makeup lover, or simply someone who applies makeup every day. I often receive countless questions about brushes, so I decided it's time to compile my thoughts into a comprehensive blog post!

I highly recommend bookmarking this page because you will certainly find yourself shopping for makeup one day, wondering if you really need a specific brush. If you want to further learn how to use your brushes for a fabulous everyday makeup look, check out my book, Be Your Own Makeup Artist.
Less Is More. (You’ve heard me say this a lot)
Sure, having an extensive makeup collection with numerous brushes can be fun; however, the truth is, most people can manage with just 2-3 brushes. Even as a professional makeup artist, I've often done quick applications for clients using only a few brushes—and guess what? It works just fine!
I completely understand. It's enjoyable to watch makeup tutorials and see all the exciting brushes that others have. Yet, it’s essential to remember that many of those influencers receive these products for free from brands. They are not spending their own money, and I doubt they would own half of them if they had to. You do not need 29 makeup brushes. Trust me.
Not convinced? What if I said that many professional makeup artists, myself included, frequently use their (clean) fingers to apply makeup instead of brushes for both themselves and their clients? In many instances, fingertips are just more effective. I emphasize this in my book, as I genuinely believe that if you already own something that works wonderfully, you don’t need to buy something else. Call me crazy, but that’s what I both practice AND preach!
So, if you don’t need countless brushes, which ones should you consider having in your makeup kit?
Choosing Makeup Brushes
Brushes are a fundamental component of your makeup kit; therefore, understanding how to select the right one is crucial. With the correct tools (which are not always the most expensive), your makeup application will look better, be easier, and last longer.
1. Choose Quality Over Quantity
Invest in quality brushes. You don’t need many brushes; just the right ones will do. When selecting a brush, keep in mind that a higher price does not always equal better quality. Opt for high-quality items, and remember that if you care for your brushes (cleaning them regularly), they will last longer. Think of it as a long-term investment.
2. Avoid Buying Sets
Do your best to avoid buying brush sets. While it’s tempting to purchase them due to their attractive organization in neat carrying cases, the harsh reality is that sets typically include many brushes that wouldn’t sell well on their own, and chances are you won’t use half of them. It’s simply a waste of money.
3. Know Which Makeup Brush Does What
Picking the right makeup brush isn't just about watching a YouTube tutorial and buying everything that's recommended. It’s also not about reading this blog post and buying every brush I mentioned. It’s vital to do your own research and determine which products work best for you, not what others recommend.
Makeup Brush 101
I want you to feel empowered with the knowledge necessary to choose the best brushes for your desired makeup look. Here's additional information about some common types of brushes and their uses.
Keep in mind that this is not an exhaustive list. My aim is to educate you on the most well-known brushes you will encounter in the makeup aisle, allowing you to select the necessary ones while skipping the rest.
Stippling Brush: This brush is ideal for buffing liquid, cream, or mousse foundation using small circular strokes to blend.
Foundation Brush: Use this flat brush to apply liquid foundation, swiping back and forth until it is well blended.
Powder Brush: This is a large, fluffy brush best for applying powder over liquid foundation.
Setting Brush: This smaller version of the powder brush effectively locks in your foundation and concealer with setting powder.
Fan Brush: This thin, flat brush is used for applying highlighter, blush, and bronzer—though I often suggest skipping it and using my preferred setting brush instead!
Blush Brush: This medium-sized brush is excellent for applying and blending blush and bronzer.
Angled Cheek Brush: This slanted brush is perfect for blush, bronzer, and contouring applications.
Lip Brush: For more precise lipstick application, a small, flat brush can be used. In my opinion, most everyday users don’t need to invest in a lip brush.
Eyeshadow Brush: This flat brush is available in both large and small sizes, perfect for applying eyeshadow.
Crease Brush: This brush's subtle angle is designed to fit within the crease of the eyelid, suitable for more advanced eyeshadow application.
Blending Brush: This small, fluffy brush is ideal for blending various shadow colors together for a more natural appearance.
Eyeliner Brush: This angled brush simplifies the process of applying gel eyeliner. If you enjoy using eyeshadow as eyeliner, it’s also handy for filling in brows!

Eyebrow Brush: This brush typically features a comb on one side and a spoolie on the other to groom and enhance brow fullness.
Beauty Sponge: This bulb-shaped sponge is perfect for patting and blending liquid foundation and concealer. Be sure to dampen the sponge before use to prevent it from soaking up your product.
Kabuki Brush: Use this short, stubby brush to apply powder foundation in small circular motions. It can also be lightly used for blush or bronzer.

Which Makeup Brushes Do Beginners Need?
If you are just starting in makeup and want to build a basic makeup kit, resist the temptation to buy a brush set. Instead, here are the brushes I believe are crucial for beginners:
- 1 brush to apply foundation (or a quality beauty sponge)
- 1 brush for contouring/blush/highlighting (such as a setting brush)
- 1 eyeshadow brush
- 1 eyeliner brush
- 1 eyebrow brush
How to Take Care of Your Brushes
Once you’ve invested in brushes, it’s essential to learn how to care for them. Brushes are designed to last a long time when cleaned and stored appropriately.
When washing brushes, use a gentle cleanser to preserve their quality. My favorite (and most affordable option) is baby shampoo! It’s gentle yet effective. I've used Johnson & Johnson’s baby shampoo for over 15 years and still use it on my brushes; however, I splurge and use Sonia Roselli Tiger Eye Soap for my professional kit.
For makeup sponges, you will want something a bit different. I use Beauty Blender sponges. I typically use a double cleansing method: Beauty Blender Liquid Cleanser followed by Beauty Blender Solid Pro (this can also be used for brushes, just a bit pricier).
